Salamanca’s Plaza Mayor, one of the most beautiful arcaded squares of the Spanish Baroque

Actualizado el

The Salamanca Plaza Mayor is one of the most beautiful arcaded squares of the Spanish Baroque, conceived as a civic forum and market in the 18th century. Its almost elliptical shape, the 88 arches supported by Doric columns and its façades carved in golden sandstone make it a monumental setting that hosts events, terraces and the city’s social life.

Where is Salamanca’s Plaza Mayor?

It is located in the heart of the historic center of Salamanca, between Universidad, Libreros and Compañía Streets, connecting with the New Cathedral and next to the House of Shells. It is the epicenter of pedestrian activity and a meeting point for locals and visitors.

When and how was it built?

The project began in 1729 by architect Alberto Churriguera and continued under the direction of Cayetano de Arroyo, until its completion in 1755. It was built over an ancient medieval square, applying the canons of Castilian Baroque: harmony of proportions, golden stone and sculptural decoration on balconies and cornice.

Why is it such a significant space?

  • Baroque architecture: harmony of arches and columns on the ground floor with balconies and an attic topped by a balustrade.
  • Cultural center: it has been the setting for bullfights, markets and academic ceremonies of the University of Salamanca.
  • World Heritage: included in Salamanca’s historic precinct declared by UNESCO in 1988.

What can you see on a visit?

  • Arcaded houses, with restaurants, bars and shops under the arches.
  • Noble balconies, bearing heraldic emblems and ornamental reliefs.
  • Central clock, marking the hours atop the main balcony.
  • Stair of Honor, leading to the central gazebo where concerts and official events take place.
  • Nocturnal illumination, which accentuates the golden stone and creates a magical atmosphere.

How is the visit organized?

Access to the square is free and permanent. To enjoy its atmosphere, the ideal is to stroll under the arcades, sit on a terrace or a bench in the gazebo, and observe the succession of arches from different angles.

Where to find information on schedules and activities?

Check the website of the Salamanca City Council or the Tourist Office (Plaza Mayor, 1) to learn about the schedule of concerts, fairs and festive events held in the square.

What else to see nearby?

  • Old and New Cathedrals, a Gothic and Baroque ensemble five minutes’ walk away.
  • House of Shells, a Gothic-Plateresque palace turned public library.
  • University of Salamanca, with its famous Plateresque façade and Schools’ Courtyard.
  • Calixto and Melibea’s Orchard, a romantic garden by the Tormes River.
  • Convent of San Esteban, an excellent example of Renaissance architecture.

In short, the Salamanca Plaza Mayor is not just an urban space: it is the living heart of the city, where history, architecture and community come together to offer a unique experience on every visit.
