Post-medieval kilns in Ávila and its interpretation center

In the historic center of Ávila, beneath the city walls and the Marqués de Santo Domingo street (the old Cucadero street), the Post-medieval kilns of Ávila are located. These three 16th-century pottery kilns were unearthed in 1995 and opened to the public in 2014. Historical context Built inside a walled area near the Adaja River, these kilns were part of a ceramic production workshop in a neighborhood that also housed dye houses, looms, and mills, taking advantage of its proximity to the water. Discovery and excavation In 1995, during excavation works in gardens behind the city wall, remains of a 16th-century pottery complex were uncovered. After nearly two decades of study and rehabilitation, they were transformed into a museum and opened to the public in 2014, with explanatory panels about the work of the potter. Architecture and function - Enclosure: 16 × 7 meters of granite in mortar, with a southern wall open to the kiln. - Twin kilns: two circular chambers of 2.30 meters in diameter, made of Arabic brick; feeding entrance on the southern wall. - Auxiliary facilities: mills for grinding clay and pillars for pressing and mixing. Interpretation center The space includes an interpretation center that recreates the potter's workshop: showcases with original tools and replicas, models, and panels explaining the manufacturing, firing, and glazing process of Ávila's pottery. Visiting and hours - Location: Marqués de Santo Domingo Street, nº 15–17, Ávila. - Hours (2024): temporarily closed from March 1st. - Tickets: available online and at the Visitor Reception Center's ticket office. - Capacity: reduced groups with guided tours. Immerse yourself in this journey to the 16th century: walk through stone corridors, admire the reborn Arabic kilns, and discover the craft of the potter who, centuries ago, shaped the ceramics that today preserve Ávila's history.
