Numancia Archaeological Site, the Celtiberian stand against Rome

The Numancia Archaeological Site offers a unique glimpse into Celtiberian resistance and subsequent Romanization. Beyond its walls and reconstructed huts, the complex preserves daily-life, defensive works, and strategic retreats of its inhabitants.
Origins and Urban Layout
- Celtiberian founding: perched on Cerro de la Muela, leveraging rocky outcrops and ravines for water
- “Labyrinth” plan: cobbled streets shift alignment at each junction, disrupting wind and assault approaches
- Population: ~2 000 in 4th c. BC, with storage areas, dwellings, and communal spaces
Fortifications and Defense
- Celtiberian wall: stone-founded ramparts with rectangular towers and wooden palisades
- Roman enclosure: adapted defenses plus nearby camps forming a 9 km siege ring
- Water system: rock-cut cisterns and channels ensured supply during the siege
The Siege of 134–133 BC
- Roman camps: seven forts on surrounding hills, garrisoned by infantry and cavalry
- 13-month blockade: total isolation, starvation, and disease
- Final stand: summer of 133 BC, defenders chose death over slavery
Romanization and Ugernum
After destruction, Romans founded Ugernum atop the ruins, reusing streets and promontories for their own town.
