Las Bardenas Reales of Navarra: A Moon-like Landscape in Film-worthy Scenery

The Las Bardenas Reales of Navarra form a 42,000-ha semi-desert where wind and water sculpt a lunar panorama of plateaus, canyons, and white-clay plains. Just minutes from Tudela, this natural park offers endless sunsets and wild corners perfect for disconnection.

Where and How to Reach It

Located southeast of Navarra between Tudela, Valtierra, Arguedas and Carcastillo, the main access runs along the NA-134 (Tudela–Arguedas), cutting through the Bardena Blanca. Signposted tracks lead you into the Bardena Negra and Bardena del Plano.

Geological Origins

Some 15 million years ago a vast lake deposited clays and gypsum. As waters receded, erosion carved iconic formations like the Castildetierra, creating a dynamic landscape that shifts with light and season.

Key Zones

  • Bardena Blanca: Bright clay plains and isolated buttes.
  • Bardena Negra: Dark slate outcrops with Aleppo pine groves.
  • Bardena del Plano: Seasonal wetlands, salt marshes and grazing fields.

Activities

  • Hiking & Biking: Over 150 km of marked trails.
  • Photo Safaris: Capture epic vistas and steppe birds like bustards and black-bellied sandgrouse.
  • Stargazing: Pristine skies with virtually no light pollution.
  • 4×4 Guided Tours: Explore inaccessible corners with licensed operators.

Precautions

  • Carry ample water and sun protection—summer highs exceed 40 °C.
  • Stay on marked routes—this is a protected ecosystem.
  • No camping or fires—high risk of wildfires.
  • Check seasonal restrictions in nesting areas during spring.

Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2000 for its geomorphology and biodiversity, Las Bardenas Reales remain an emblem of Navarra and an open-air laboratory for nature lovers.
