The Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos stands in a striking contemporary building beside the cathedral. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage designation for the Atapuerca sites (2015), its avant-garde architecture has won over 40 awards.
Showcasing Atapuerca
Designed to preserve and display the Atapuerca finds, the museum houses key fossils of three human species that inhabited Europe hundreds of thousands of years ago.
Homo antecessor
- Gran Dolina: over 80 remains unearthed in 1994, dating to 850 000 years ago.
- Features: tall, robust individuals with archaic faces and smaller, less convoluted brains.
Homo heidelbergensis
- “Miquelón” (Skull 5): from the Sima de los Huesos (1992); ~500 000 years old, age ~35.
- “Elvis” (Complete pelvis): recovered in 1994; male ~1.75 m tall, 95 kg.
