Museum of Romanticism: Immerse Yourself in the Era and Unwind in a Genuine Romantic-Style Café

The Museum of Romanticism welcomes you in a neoclassical townhouse—the former Palace of the Marquis of Matallana (1792)—as if stepping back in time: rooms furnished with mahogany furniture, gas lamps, and display cases preserving the intimate life of Spain’s 19th-century bourgeoisie.

Neoclassicism in Service of Emotion

With its giant order façade and triangular pediment, this building marries classical sobriety with the Romantic penchant for detail: elegant moldings, friezes with medallions, and an original hydraulic-tile floor in the vestibule. Each floor is laid out like a family living space, evoking literary gatherings and musical evenings.

A Collection to Feel the 19th Century

Over 16,000 items—paintings, drawings, furniture, everyday objects—tell a vivid story of Spanish Romanticism. Highlights include:

  • Historical and Genre Paintings: battle scenes by José de Madrazo and legend-inspired works by Eugenio Lucas Velázquez.
  • Portraits: by Mariano Fortuny, Vicente López Portaña and Federico de Madrazo.
  • Furnished Salons: the Blue, Green and Red Salons retain their original tapestries, crystal chandeliers, and consoles.
  • Romantic Library: first editions of Espronceda, Larra, Zorrilla, and 19th-century press photographs.
  • Decorative Arts: porcelain from the Royal Factory of Buen Retiro, glassware and wrought-iron pendulum clocks.
